Servilleta bordada

Doña Elena hacía servilletas bordadas en Axochiapan. Hoy anda un poquito enferma y se entretiene con ellas. Las compra con el dibujo hecho. En un mes puede bordar una. Las usa como regalo de cumpleaños. No aprendió a leer en la escuela porque era zurda. El maestro le pegaba con una regla en las manos y, después de tres años, dejó la escuela y se fue con su hermana a trabajar en el campo. Solo de casada aprendió a leer con la Biblia. Sabe que bordar es otra forma de escribir y expresarse y eso le hace sentir bien.

Doña Elena made hand-embroidered napkins in Axochiapan. She does not feel too good these days. Working on the napkins keeps her busy. It takes her a month to make one. She gives them away as birthday presents. She did not learn how to write in school. Because she was left handed, the teacher beat her hands with a ruler and, after three years, she and her sister went to work in the fields instead. Doña Elena knows intuitively that embroidering is another way of writing and expressing oneself; and this makes her happy.
